Working with the United Nations BIOFIN Team
Update from the NZ BIOFIN Impact Accelerator Project
Author: Ian Herburt, Project Lead. University of Otago
BIOFIN was initiated ten years ago to divert more finance towards biodiversity goals. BIOFIN is now present in over 40 countries, with another 90 nations in design stage. BIOFIN is working with governments to catalyse investments in nature. The process builds on the pillars of engagement, partnerships, and technical work customised to the country. BIOFIN offers a way for countries to break from the historical pattern of biodiversity loss using biodiversity finance solutions.
The United Nations BIOFIN team has been very supportive of the New Zealand Assessment and hold a seat on the University of Otago NZ BIOFIN Reference Group.
Members of the BIOFIN team - Launch of the improved BIOFIN method used internationally to assess biodiversity spend and improvements on October 21 in Colombia. This method will be used by Otago University Business School.
The New Zealand Biodiversity Finance Assessment is an important step towards halting biodiversity loss and securing a sustainable future for Aotearoa New Zealand. Based on the proven BIOFIN methodology, this assessment will provide an understanding of New Zealand's biodiversity finance landscape and pave the way for more effective investment strategies. The collaborative nature of this initiative emphasizes the shared responsibility of all stakeholders to conserve New Zealand's natural heritage for future generations. If we care about our children’s common future, we care about enduring biodiversity finance.
